Piloty was the son of the lithographer Ferdinand Piloty. His older brother was the history painter Karl von Piloty. At the age of 15, from 1843, he studied painting at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts under his future brother-in-law Karl Schorn and was influenced by his older brother, whose colorist style he adopted. He also studied in his father's studio. As early as 1848, his portrait of "Saint Sebastian" was exhibited at an art exhibition and he participated in the figurative decoration of the circular painting of Jerusalem, produced under the direction of Ulrich Halbreiter from 1848 to 1850. He created several historical frescoes in the Munich National Museum and in the town hall of Landsberg am Lech. His most famous work is the portrait of King Ludwig II of Bavaria in a general's uniform and coronation mantle (1865). Among his other major works are five large frescoes in the Munich National Museum and the murals depicting scenes from the city's history in the town hall of Landsberg am Lech.
