19th-century European Oil On Canvas – Mother And Child With A Magpie – French School Of Alsace

A charming and beautiful old oil-on-canvas painting—original and exquisitely rendered—depicting a peaceful scene of domestic life. A young mother, seated in front of a rustic thatched cottage, is preparing fresh vegetables, while a young child, wearing a bonnet, dozes, leaning against a wooden tub placed beside her. A magpie in a cage mounted on the wall, a slightly ajar green shutter, and the shaded garden in the background enrich the composition with delicate narrative details.

The mother is elegantly dressed in a deep navy blue dress, a white apron, and a terracotta-red shawl with rich patterns. The gentle expressions, the palette of warm, earthy tones, and the intimate nature of this everyday scene are characteristic of 19th-century European sentimental genre painting.

Painted in oil on canvas with remarkable finesse, the work is still mounted on its original wooden stretcher. On the reverse is an oval blue stencil—now partially faded—bearing a partially legible inscription, likely that of a former Parisian supplier, merchant, or retailer.

Date: circa 1850–1880.
Period: 19th century.

Subject: a mother and child preparing vegetables in front of a house, with a magpie in a cage.
Frame: sold unframed.
Dimensions: 38 × 46 cm.

Condition:
The painting is in excellent condition and retains its authenticity, which is remarkable for a work from this period. The canvas is intact. The painted surface shows a fine network of age-related craquelure, as well as slight wear along the edges and a few small areas where paint is missing, consistent with its age. The reverse side of the canvas and the original wooden stretcher also show signs of wear and handling over time.
