"To Odette Dumaret; To protect her in her career as a painter, her gifted nature, by supporting her in her beautiful understanding of art, which will later justify the confidence I place in her, so pure, so strong-willed. With all my joy and affection."
Suzanne Valadon
Paris, December 1935
Odette Dumaret is an artist who found her way very early thanks to the decisive encounter with Suzanne Valadon, whose student and protégé she became. Her rigorous teaching aimed to affirm her talent and personality. After the death of her mentor in 1938, Odette Dumaret developed a style made of bright and bold colors, large and dynamic forms, and an intense lyricism resonating with the influence of the avant-garde. She exhibited in 1936 at the Galerie Krohg alongside Valadon, then pursued a career rich in exhibitions, in Paris and abroad.
In our self-portrait, Odette Dumaret observes us with intensity: her frontal and severe gaze affirms a lively spirit challenging the viewer. The posture is firm, underlined by the gesture of the hand holding a red ribbon, both a symbol of femininity and a sign of defiance. The brushstrokes, energetic and nervous, in vivid chromatic ranges, reinforce the sculptural character of the pose. Odette Dumaret presents herself as a strong and free woman, resolutely modern.
