Gustave Madelain (1867-1944) Halle Saint-pierre, Paris Montmartre 1900/1910. Orsay, Carnavalet

Artist: Gustave Madelain (1867-1944)
A very interesting oil on canvas by Gustave Madelain depicting a lively scene at the Halle Saint-Pierre in Paris around 1900/1910, signed lower left. The canvas measures 61 x 50 cm (excluding the frame) and 69 x 57.5 cm (including the frame). This is a superb and interesting post-Impressionist composition by Gustave Madelain, who paints a scene of daily life in Paris, more precisely at the Halle Saint-Pierre just below Montmartre. The painting can be dated to around 1900/1910, not only because of Madelain's still very Impressionist brushstrokes, but also, and especially, because scaffolding is still visible on the Basilica of Montmartre. Given that the construction of the bell tower was completed in 1912, the scene takes place before that date. Madelain's style is immediately recognizable, both in his architectural settings and his figures. His palette is remarkably rich, dominated by ochres and oranges, as well as yellows, reds, greens, sky blues, and more. This work, with its quality and historical significance for Paris, would be worthy of a museum display. Gustave Madelain is indeed very well represented in French museums, particularly at the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Carnavalet in Paris. Gustave Madelain (1867-1944) was a French painter, born in Charly. This Impressionist painter studied in Paris and, from 1907 onwards, exhibited successfully at the Salon des Indépendants, where he received numerous awards for his landscapes and cityscapes. His paintings are true testimonies of daily life in Paris from the 1900s to the 1940s. He acquired a reputation as a painter of riverside quays, often depicting monumental architectural subjects in the evening, observed with a subtle palette rich in tones. Madelain's retrospective (Paris, 1926) was a great success, with six architectural works purchased by the French government. Today, his works sell worldwide, sometimes achieving excellent results, especially his lively scenes of Parisian life. This oil painting is on its original canvas, in very good condition, having been recently cleaned. There is only a small, old restoration of 1.5 cm² in the sky. It is delivered in a modern gilt frame. The work is guaranteed authentic.
