Colonial Trade Ivory Figurine, Loango Coast, Late 19th Century

Carved ivory figure depicting a standing man in a long coat, with incised vertical lines, button details, and ribbed cuffs. The eyes are inlaid with small dark inserts, lending the piece a vivid, expressive character.

Such works belong to the tradition of Loango Coast ivory carvings, produced in the late 19th century along the West and Central African coast (present-day Congo/Angola region) for export to European travelers and collectors. These figures, often shown in Western dress and executed in a deliberately simplified, upright style, reflect the encounter between local artisanship and colonial demand.

Height: 8.3 cm
Condition: good with natural age cracks and wear consistent with age.
