Antique Ceylon Bronze Serakkalaya Ritual Pedestal Stand Kandyan Sri Lanka, 19th Century

Antique bronze Serakkalaya pedestal stand from Ceylon (Sri Lanka), dating to the 19th century and made in the traditional Kandyan style.

The stand is finely cast in bronze and consists of a circular tray with an engraved central rosette motif surrounded by decorative borders. The rim of the tray is pierced with a repeating ornamental pattern, giving the piece both elegance and lightness. The pedestal shaft is turned with a series of moulded rings and bands of scroll decoration, resting on a broad circular base also decorated with engraved motifs.

In Sri Lanka, the Serakkalaya served as a raised pedestal used in ceremonial or domestic settings. Such stands could support ritual oil lamps, offering vessels, flowers, or other devotional objects associated with Buddhist shrines and household altars. Objects of this type were produced in traditional bronze workshops and reflect the refined metalworking traditions of the Kandyan period.

The bronze has developed a rich dark patina with areas of natural verdigris that attest to its age and authenticity.
