"Large Ink Drawing 16th 16th Century Antonio Tempesta Baroque Italy Horses Florence War "
Large pen and ink from the end of the 16th century, Baroque, representing a cavalry clash that can be attributed to the Florentine painter Antonio TEMPESTA (1555-1630). This Mannerist artist was considered the master of battle scenes and epic representations. The Mannerist current is found here in the treatment of the horses' bodies with exaggerated volumes, tortuous lines and in the contorted attitudes of the soldiers' bodies. Everything is excessive, the work exudes great power. Comparing other drawings by TEMPESTA showing soldiers on horseback fighting, the connection with this ink is obvious. As you can see in the photos, this ink has some losses. A collector in the 19th century protected it with a strong cardboard. The losses do not prevent the readability of this work which has retained all its power and dramatic intensity. Format: 61 cm x 44 cm. Additional photos on request.
