Oil on canvas from the Troubadour period, likely by Deveria and his workshop, depicting two richly dressed young noblewomen with an elderly man who is telling their fortunes. A deck of cards lies at their feet, and the intimate atmosphere of the scene suggests a room in a castle. The painting is unsigned, but the quality of the depiction and the delicate rendering of the two young women's faces are entirely in the style of Eugène Deveria, a renowned painter of the Troubadour period. The work dates from before 1850; the return to medieval styles was very fashionable among many artists in the first half of the 19th century. The painting has been relined but retains its original stretcher. It is presented in a blackened wood frame. Framed dimensions: 59.50 cm x 50 cm.
