19th Century Altar Reliquary Cross

Large altar reliquary cross – 19th century – Flanders

Imposing altar crucifix in blackened wood, decorated with a radiant gilt bronze Christ, and resting on a polygonal base decorated with multiple relics inserted under glass.

Description

The base presents a polychrome statuette of the Virgin and Child under glass, surrounded by reliquary medallions with handwritten inscriptions identifying in particular:
• Saint James
• Saint Paul
• Saint Mark the Evangelist
• Saint Simon
• Saint Peter the Apostle
• Saint Barnabas

Around are other relics accompanied by small painted images of saints, forming a set of great spiritual and decorative richness.
Cross surmounted by gilt bronze fleurons and decorated with the INRI titulus and the skull of Golgotha at the base.

Total height: 64 cm

Condition:

Good general condition, with wear and cracks in the blackened wood, small alterations of use to the glasses.Rare reliquary bringing together several relics of apostles and saints of the early Church, ideal for collectors of sacred art.
