Henri-edmond Cross, Study Of A Succulent In Bloom, Watercolor Signed With The Studio Stamp
Artist: Henri-edmond Cross (1856 – 1910)
Charming study of a flowering succulent, an exotic succulent resembling the echeveria purpusorum green gilva native to Mexico. A lively yet firm watercolor by Henri-Edmond Cross, with his studio stamp at the bottom left, the mark of which has faded over time, likely due to exposure to light (sunlight) without the protection of a frame. Dating from his early naturalist period. And therefore, more likely produced by the artist near the Jardin des Plantes, in particular, where he drew his botanical inspiration, rather than later in his Var garden at his house in Saint-Clair. Note the remarkable grasp of the volume of the succulent's fleshy leaves, with their almost cubist geometric accents, as well as the harmonious monochrome of shades of green. The haughty bearing of the pink flowers allows a glimpse of the saffron pistil. Color is already at the heart of this superb botanical study. No borrowing from Impressionism and even less from Pointillism, Cross matures here the matrix of his talent, attentive observation, in a naturalist approach. Knowing how to transcribe from nature, the perfection of the beauty of this same Nature in a living study before detaching himself from the motif to retain only the light through the prism of color. Within this very beautiful watercolor study, the quality of the hand of a remarkable artist of modern art, his drawing, and already, his sense of color, is fully affirmed.
