Pierre-auguste Renoir, The Pinned Hat, Berthe Morisot's Daughter And Her Cousin - Etching
Artist: Pierre-auguste Renoir (1841-1919)
Etching, Delteil 8, 3rd state, signed in the plate
Dimensions:
Engraving only: 11.5 cm x 8 cm – Sheet at sight: 15.3 cm x 12.3 cm – Framed: 31 cm x 34.2 cm
Well-inked proof from 1921, overall oxidation, nice frame.
This famous engraving is very representative of Renoir's stylistic DNA and the characteristics of his engraved work. It also has the particularity of representing Berthe Morisot's daughter, Julie Manet, in the presence of her cousin, Pauline Gobillard. Delteil 8. 1st state listed by Delteil as dating from 1894, followed by a second state the same year published in "La vie artistique" by Gustave Geoffroy, copies on laid paper (after 15 ex. on Japan paper and 15 ex. on China paper comprising three states of the frontispiece in black, bistre and green). This is the 3rd state, the final state in a posthumous print from 1921. Beautiful fineness of inking with the signature in the plate, published outside the text in Renoir et ses amis, Fleury, 1921. The first state being noted by Delteil as appearing in the collections of this same Georges Rivière.
