Neoclassical Red Chalk Counterproofs
One of the simple ways to duplicate a drawing to show it to his teachers who remained in France, while keeping the original for himself, was for a student in Rome before the revolution to make a counter-proof of it. This method explains the very faithful character of the drawing, he borrows the material by contact, but with a lighter tone. Here we have a beautiful example of this technique, illustrating a statue from antiquity, certainly a muse. The line is mastered, the work on the folds remarkable. Framed in the 1950s, with a pretty mat, the laid paper is slightly yellowed.
