A self-taught artist, Guercin (1591-1666), whose real name was Giovanni Francesco Barbieri, first trained with painters in his town of Cento, then left to study in Bologna, where he had access to the works and the artistic environment of the Carracci. Years of work followed, in Venice, Rome, Bologna and a prolific body of work, which can be found today in numerous museums around the world and churches in Italy.
