Description
A superb, exquisitely executed carved ivory Christ, depicted dead on the cross, his head tilted on his shoulder in an expression of pain and resignation. The facial work, the finely detailed beard, the wavy hair, and the deeply carved crown of thorns testify to an expert hand. The slender body has a marked anatomy, typical of southern
Baroque sculpture, with a perizonium tied at the side and richly pleated. The hands and feet are pierced with old wooden pegs allowing its attachment to the support.
This type of ivory Christ was intended to adorn altar crosses or private devotional crucifixes, common in the Iberian Peninsula and Italy between the 17th and 18th centuries.
Presented in a later frame, on a red velvet background.
