= Thonet, founded in 1819 by Michael Thonet in Germany, is the oldest furniture manufacturer in the world. Specializing in the Biedermeier style, it distinguished itself from the 1830s onwards by its innovative steam-bent wood technique. In 1842, he was invited to Vienna, Austria, by Prince Metternich, where he founded Gebrüder Thonet with his sons. Chair No. 14, created around 1859, revolutionized industrial furniture production with its lightness and ease of assembly. Thonet established itself in European and American cafés. In the 20th century, it adopted tubular steel with the Bauhaus designers. After World War II, Georg Thonet relaunched the company. Thonet continues to innovate with contemporary designers, while producing its iconic pieces, now exhibited in the greatest museums.
