Early 18th Century Imari Porcelain Plate, Lion And Peony
Imari porcelain plate with cobalt blue decoration, circular in shape with a slightly scalloped, contoured rim.
The central decoration depicts a fantastical animal, possibly a Buddhist lion, moving among stylized rocks at the foot of a flowering shrub with large peonies and foliage rendered in flat, nuanced areas.
The lion dance originated from a custom associated with the celebration of the New Year during the Edo period.
The rim is simple, highlighted by the undulating movement of the border.
Made around 1720, Japan, Edo period. Diameter 28 cm.
A very fine piece.
Carefully packaged.
