"Carved Wooden Monkey. Signed Netsuke. Edo Japan."
Carved wooden netsuke, probably cherry, representing a crouching monkey in an unusual and very amusing posture, the two outstretched arms joining the feet. The beautiful carving and the carefully incised details announce a good artist. The himotoshi is naturally formed by the folded legs. Beautiful satin patina. On the buttocks are engraved Chinese characters that we have not been able to decipher. Slightly worn by use but all the details remain visible. Japan Edo period 19th century. 36mm.
