Vaishnavi Sculpture With Nagas, Made Of Wood; Nepalese Religious Craft, Mid-20th Century
Vaishnavi Sculpture with Nagas, Wooden Nepalese Religious Art, Mid-20th Century
A true gem of mid-20th-century Nepalese woodcarving and religious art, this large figure represents the shakti of Vishnu, Vaishnavi, who is his divine, warrior-like feminine principle.
This wooden depiction of the Vaishnavi shakti presents her with the attributes of Vishnu: four arms, two of which are in the abhaya-mudra posture, dispelling fear. In her right hand she holds the Shankha, or sacred conch shell, and in her left, Vishnu’s discus, or Chakra.
The most impressive attribute is the Naga, a multi-headed serpent deity sheltering Vaishnavi—a key attribute of Vishnu and a symbol of primordial power and protection—which demonstrates why he is the primordial god of the Hindu pantheon.
In very good overall condition; it is important to note that two hands have been reattached, though otherwise the details remain of the highest quality.
Fast and careful shipping to France, Europe, and worldwide.
