Carved Wood Sculpture Of Saint John The Evangelist High Veneto Area, Second Half Of The 18th C

Elegant wooden sculpture representing Saint John the Evangelist, entirely hand-carved in Swiss pine (cirmolo). The saint is identifiable by the presence of the eagle – symbol of his elevated spiritual vision – and the book, a clear reference to the Gospel he authored.
The figure features a lively and well-balanced composition, with graceful movement in both the posture and drapery, indicating the sculptor’s skill and the artwork’s origin in the High Veneto region during the second half of the 18th century.
The surface is finely finished in faux stone, with original gilded highlights still well preserved, lending refinement and a play of light and shadow to the piece.
The modest size (height 85 cm, base width approx. 33 cm) and fine workmanship suggest an original placement in a private altar or chapel, possibly part of an apostolic series.
