Evocative carved wooden sculpture depicting a female figure, likely Mary Magdalene, made in Northern Italy in the early 18th century. The piece is carved, polychrome-painted, and gilded, with a highly expressive treatment of the drapery — deeply cut and flowing, full of movement and dramatic presence.
The figure, full-length and missing both arms, steps forward with one bare leg, an iconographic detail often associated with devotional imagery, particularly scenes of Lamentation or altar settings in which Mary Magdalene appears in a penitent and emotional pose.
The gilding remains stable and visually rich, with a beautiful aged patina. Evidence of old wormwood activity is visible, now fully treated and inactive.
