Engraving Giovanni Valle, “the Polesine Of Rovigo, Duchy Of Ferrara And Dogado”, 1793

Giovanni Valle was a Venetian engraver and cartographer active in the late 18th and early 19th century. He is mainly known for his geographical engravings and maps that contributed to the great cartographic movement in Venice at the time. His works are distinguished by their topographical accuracy, geographical details, borders and roads.
The engraving on offer here depicts “The Polesine of Rovigo, the Duchy of Ferrara and the southern part of the Dogado”, and was produced using the etching technique. It is a work of remarkable precision and care, characterised by careful marking on all sides and on the map, facilitating orientation.

The artist's name is given on the engraving itself in the bottom left-hand corner “Di Giovanni Valle, Venezia, 1793”.
The entire sheet measures 80.5x56 cm and the engraving 66x45 cm. The state of preservation is good.
