Renato Guttuso was one of the most important Italian painters of the 20th century.
The work is a lithograph made in etching and aquatint about the 1960s and represents one of his famous paintings made in 1951/52: The Battle of Ponte dell'Ammiraglio. Of this work, Guttuso made 150 prints with Arabic numbering, 50 with Roman numbering and 20 as an artist's proof. This is print XXII/L, numbered in the lower left-hand corner of the sheet. In the bottom right-hand corner is the artist's signature. The scene depicts the popular uprising that took place in Palermo in 1860, during Garibaldi's Expedition of the Thousand. A dynamic and crowded composition.
