"Large Kanaga Dogon Mali Mask"
Large Kanaga mask of the Dogons of Mali, this mask is a bit of an emblem of the abstract cubist style found in primitive art and which influenced Parisian artists in the last century. This one is very sober, very raw, a little white kaolin and bitumen on light wood, it still has its net on the back, it was held by a bit by the dancer. This kind of geometric figure is often interpreted as being an insect or a lizard, according to my research it is the union of the 2 opposing forces, life/death, high/low ... which is symbolized here, hence its use in funeral ceremonies. A large size 114 cm high by 60 wide, it shows wear, repairs, but no missing parts. This mask must date from the 1940s/50s.
