A beautiful and very large example of the work of the British landscape artist Henry Hadfield Cubley (1858-1934) painted in 1896. It depicts a pastoral highland scene with figures, highland cattle, and a crofter’s cottage. The mountains and the wonderfully atmospheric background capture the beauty of the highland landscape.

British artist Henry Hadfield Cubley came from Newark in Nottinghamshire and is predominantly known for his fine landscapes. He studied under his uncle, William Cubley (1816-1896) and his works are held in numerous public collections. He was elected Mayor of Newark in 1866, and he painted many of Newark’s aldermen and mayors. He taught art at Newark Magnus Grammar School.

Cubley had a great love of landscape, at which he excelled both in watercolours and oils. He spent a lot of time capturing Scottish highland landscapes which were very popular in late Victorian and early Edwardian Britain, particularly among the aristocracy.
