Overall measurements with the frame are 115cm x 70cm x 6cm and the painting itself measuring 91 cm x 48 cm
A very large and beautifully composed, mid to late 19th century oil-on-canvas study of a woodland scene with a lady walking in the foreground along pathway. The painting is wonderfully atmospheric and represents a fine and typical example of the artist’s deft brush strokes.
Heffner perfected a very distinctive style of painting landscapes and invariably caught the beauty of tall trees in particular in a quite unique way. His style shows the influence of the French Barbizon movement and in particular the work of Corot.
Karl Heffner was a well-regarded German landscape painter in oils and watercolours. Born in Würzburg in Bavaria in 1849, his early training was as a musician, but he had a strong interest in painting and he travelled to Munich to study with Adolf Stademann and Adolf Heinrich Lier.
Heffner was one of the greatest exponents of the Munich School of Painting. He travelled extensively in Germany, England, Italy and Holland, exhibited in Vienna and Munich between 1873 and 1883, and in the Royal Academy in London between 1880 and 1881.
His works are held in numerous public collections including at the V&A in London.
The auction record price for the artist is 17,625 USD for "The bather", which sold at Christie's New York, East in 2000
