Description: A lovely early 19th Century oil-on-board portrait of a lady very much in the style of Thomas Lawrence within its original oval slip and mounted in a 19th century English gilt frame. In our opinion it is possible that the composition was a preparatory study for another painting.
Thomas Lawrence was born in Bristol and began drawing in Devizes, where his father was an innkeeper. At the age of ten, having moved to Bath, he was supporting his family with his pastel portraits. At eighteen he went to London and soon established his reputation as a portrait painter in oils, receiving his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790.
Lawrence was the leading British portrait painter of his generation. Self-taught, Lawrence was a brilliant draughtsman and known for his gift of capturing a true likeness. He was famed for his technical virtuosity as well as his imaginative approach to his compositions, aiming to seize the expression rather than merely copying his sitter’s features.
Lawrence became an associate of the Royal Academy in 1791, a full member in 1794, and the fourth president of the RA in 1820.
Note: We acquired the painting from a reputable London-based auction house with the published material stating it was “The studio of Sir Thomas Lawrence”, but we have decided to offer it as circle of / possible studio of the named artist.
Condition report: in good condition for its age with minor craquelure. The painting board has damage to three corners and was rectangular, but due to its mounting within the oval aperture this is not at all noticeable. There appears to be some re-touching to the sitter’s hair but this blends in fine enough with the composition. It's probable that the painting has been cleaned.
In our opinion the painting is ready to hang.
