Jean van CLEEMPUT (1881-1953). Expressionist portrait, oil on canvas, signed in the upper right corner. Note traces of restoration on the back (two patches) and that the canvas is loose (poorly placed on the stretcher). Dimensions: Frame: 71.5 x 60 cm Subject: 61 x 51 cm Realist painter, draftsman and engraver of landscapes, seascapes, portraits, city views, interiors, still lifes and flowers. Student of C. Montald at the Academy of Brussels. Improved his skills in Paris from 1898. Became one of the restorers used by the Louvre. Returned to Brussels. He married the sister of Jean Brusselmans. Spent the First World War in England. His work glorified the humble and the Brabant landscape. In 1905, he depicted the main monuments and picturesque corners of Grimbergen. Expressed himself in warm and lively tones. His art evolved towards Fauvism and Expressionism. He was a founding member of the Association of Belgian Xylographers. Several works are in the possession of the municipality of Grimbergen and the Cabinet des Estampes in Brussels.
