Jean GOUWELOOS (1868-1943). Elegant on the beach at Knokke (1926), superb oil on cardboard, which bears on the back a label titling, dating and attributing the painting to the painter. This cardboard comes from the Gouweloos brother & sister establishments and bears the ink mention of "Croquis". It is in fact the study of a larger painting by the painter and entitled Op het Strand and sold at De Vuyst for 8065 euros. Dimensions: Frame: 54.5 x 50 cm. Subject: 35 x 30 cm. He was a painter, draftsman and lithographer. He was the brother of Charles Gouweloos. He trained at the Brussels Academy under J. Portaels between 1873 and 1894. He also learned the trade from the painter-decorator C. Albert and worked from the age of 16 in the family printing shop. In 1902, he designed twelve large panels depicting historical scenes and Masonic symbols for the Brussels Lodge. During the First World War, he stayed in the Netherlands. As a painter, he produced landscapes, seascapes, but mainly female figures, portraits, and nudes. He used a realistic form with luminist tendencies. According to the press: "His nudes are bathed in a pearly light." From 1891, he was a member of the Voorwaarts group and from 1895 of the Le Sillon group, where he became friends with V. Gilsoul. Works by him can be found in museums in Brussels, Liège, Antwerp and Kortrijk.
