Object description :

"Sculpture - Elijah And The Raven, 17th Century"

BAS-RELIEF in linden representing ELIJAH fed by a raven.
Dimensions: 41 x 29.5 cm
Northern European School, 17th century.

The sculpture is of beautiful finesse, the face, the hands, the pleated garment are very well treated.
Very good condition, without restoration or accident
Historique :
Ahab is the king of Israel. Married to Jezebel, a Phoenician princess, he idolizes Baal, the god of the Canaanites. God foresees the intervention of Elijah to make him see reason. Ahab wanted to punish the prophet for his insolence and sent his militias after him. God then addresses, Elijah: "Go from here, head east and hide by the torrent of Cherith, east of the Jordan. You will drink from the torrent and I order the ravens to give you food there. " » Chapter XVII of the Book of Kings

Can we see here the origin of the familiar expression designating a village or an isolated place, that it is "supplied by crows"?
