A Carved Oak Panel Depicting An Allegorical Female Figure
Regionalist work, circa 1925–1930
This carved wooden panel depicts a nude woman seated in a stylized landscape.
She holds a staff or scepter, while her left hand pours forth a stream evoking water or abundance.
Beside her is a heart resting on an altar, a symbolic element that may evoke love, fidelity, or an allegory of emotions.
The highly geometric treatment of the vegetation, the simplification of the forms, and the overall composition are reminiscent of the Art Deco style of the 1920s–1930s, although the execution is characteristic of a craftsman or a regional workshop rather than that of an academic sculptor.
The sculpture is carved from a single piece of oak.
The visible central crack is the result of the wood’s natural shrinkage over time.
