A Bit of History:
Before the introduction of the Metric System in 1799, almost every locality had its own system of measurements; which, of course, complicated trade. This pitcher was therefore made by a Parisian master craftsman to the Poissy standard, which differed significantly from the Parisian one. It bears the calibration mark featuring the city’s coat of arms, affixed by a calibrator appointed by the royal or ecclesiastical authorities, certifying that the pitcher’s capacity conformed to local standards.
