Pewter PITCHER, with shoulder, flared foot, acorn thumb and cross handle. The gauging cone showing the legal quantity is indicated by an arrow on one of the pictures.
Hallmark of Nicolas PREAUX received master in 1744: serpentaire / N.PREAVX / 1751.
Height: 27.3 cm.
LISIEUX, Between 1751 and 1780


In very good condition and of good quality.
This master died in 1762, his widow continued the activity until 1780 with the same mark.
This type with shoulder and cross handle is characteristic of this production center of which Nicolas Préaux was the most famous master. The gauge in force in this lower Normandy center was 2.49 liters for the largest, called "POT".
All the others are obtained by dividing the previous one by two and this up to the smallest...
Each center having its own gauge there was therefore no national uniformity or common rule except the one mentioned above until the establishment of the Metric System.
