Very Large Pewter Dish - Turin, 18th Century
Artist: Les Frères Filiberti
Free shipping within mainland France via La Poste or Mondial Relay
************
Very large round pewter platter, known as a "venison platter," with a molded rim. It is stamped with concentric friezes of repeating motifs: passant lions, Saint Sebastian, grids, small flowers, fans, and various geometric patterns.
The (worn) hallmark of the Fratelli Filiberto, active from 1770, is applied three times: two angels bearing a crown / FRATELLI FILIBERTO. The last photograph shows the very legible hallmark of these masters found on another piece.
Diameter: 56.7 cm.
Turin, late 18th century.
Exceptionally large and in very good condition, offering a beautiful decorative presence.
These platters were used to present small game or poultry "in their natural state" at the table. Once presented to the guests, the platter would return to the kitchen so that its contents could be carved and then eaten.
Bibliography: “Il peltro in Piemonte” by Attilio Bonci, 2005.
