Jean-Mathias Schiff (1870-1939): "Portrait of a Soldier with a Military Medal", oil on canvas 35 X 24 cm, mounted in a period gilt frame with pearl and strand net 39 X 28 cm.
Tension bands on the back. Annotated, signed and dated top right "Souvenir de 1915, JM Schiff".
The author, an eminent painter from Lorraine, brother of the sculptor Mathias, was also curator of the Musée de Nancy.
Even if the photos do not do it justice, the cleaning has restored all its finesse to this portrait of great psychological depth of a soldier with glasses and an arrogant mustache.
