"Pair Of 19th Century German Porcelain Sweetmeat Figures, Attributed To Volkstedt"
Delicately modeled pair of German porcelain sweetmeat
figures, attributed to the Volkstedt manufactory, Thuringia, c.1880. Each
figure represents a young girl standing with one foot raised upon a reticulated
basket, holding a bird in her hand and wearing a dotted classical-style tunic.
The rococo-style scroll bases are molded and painted in pastel tones. On
the bases an underglaze blue crossed-swords mark typically used by Thuringian
porcelain factories emulating the well-known crossed-swords mark of Meissen in
the 19th century.
A beautifully preserved pair, with no damage or restoration. One small
firing crack near the base, a typical result of kiln tension during production.
Notably, all fragile applied details — including flowers and birds - are
completely intact, which is particularly rare in figures of this type. One
figure has a slight gold brush mark on the hand, likely from original
decoration.
Measurements:
Left-arm figure: Height 19.5 cm, Width 13 cm, Depth 10
cm, Weight 374 g
Right-arm figure: Height 19 cm, Width 13 cm, Depth 10
cm, Weight 367 g
A rare and decorative pair, offering high artistic and
historical appeal for collectors of German porcelain and Meissen-style revival
pieces.
