Superb ceremonial armchair, dating from the end of the 18th century / beginning of the 19th century, made of richly carved and gilded beech. It features a rectangular backrest slightly inclined towards the rear, known as a "crooked" backrest, straight armrests with cuffs resting on curved uprights with rectangular stops, saber-shaped hind legs, and front legs carved in the shape of horns of plenty.
The ornamental repertoire—composed of laurel branches, palmettes, rosettes, acanthus leaves, and small flowers—is fully in keeping with the aesthetic of this transitional period. The belts decorated with clasps reinforce this stylistic lineage, evoking the productions of the major cabinetmakers of the period, notably Pierre-Benoît Marcion, Pierre-Antoine Bellangé, and Jacob Desmalter.
The particularly characteristic horn of plenty motif of the feet refers to the creations of Georges Jacob at the end of the 18th century, where it frequently appears in armrest consoles. This armchair thus testifies to a formal dialogue between neoclassical tradition and the affirmation of imperial taste, specific to the early years of the 19th century.
