Bernard Molitor, “greek Style” Pedestal Table Stamped From The Louis XVI Period.
Elegant and rare mahogany and mahogany veneer pedestal table, Louis XVI period, stamped by the famous cabinetmaker Bernard Molitor (1755-1833). The circular top, set with an ebony inlay, rests on a turned and fluted shaft, supported by a tripod base with curved and fluted legs, ending in a Greek scroll pattern. The so-called "Greek" leg, which appeared at the end of the 18th century, is characterized by an inverted console shape, evoking both the antique pilaster and the architectural volute. Directly inspired by the archaeological heritage of Greco-Roman excavations, this motif was disseminated by the great collections of models of the neoclassical period, notably by Percier and Fontaine, in their work Recueil de décorations intérieures (1798-1801).
Taken up by the greatest Parisian cabinetmakers, the Greek foot symbolizes the transition from Louis XVI furniture to the Directory and the Consulate, where the antique became the dominant decorative language.
In Bernard Molitor, this vocabulary translates into a search for balance and sobriety, combined with high quality of execution.
