Very beautiful oil on canvas, attributed to the workshop of Jacques Louis David, produced at the end of the 18th century or at the very beginning of the 19th century.

A very accomplished fragment or preparatory work, the work could even have been created by the Master, as the technique and pictorial details are so similar.
In the opinion of several specialists and historians consulted, the man depicted is probably Odysseus, King of Ithaca, one of the most famous heroes of Greek mythology.

Very good state of conservation, original frame and canvas.

Certificate of authenticity and attribution from Mr. René Millet, provided to the buyer.

Beautiful gilded wood frame from the Empire-Consulate period.

Dimensions:
Without frame 43 cm / 30 cm
With frame 60 cm / 52.5 cm

Jacques Louis David's workshop, which quickly became David's school, was one of the most popular places of artistic training between 1781, the date of its reception at the painting academy, and his flight to Brussels in 1816.
The life of the workshop is also well known to us, both through a large number of existing letters, but also thanks to the memories of Etienne-Jean Delécluze, integrated into the workshop from 1796.
First installed at the Louvre, David had set up a workshop there for the needs of his teaching and production.
This space was named “the Horaces’ workshop” in homage to the painting composed in 1784 and stored on site.
