An Arab Shamshir Saber - Levantine Countries, Probably Syria, 19th Century

An Arab shamshir saber - Levant countries, probably Syria, 19th century. Two horn plates hilt decorated with steel nails and riveted with chiseled circular brass buttons (one button missing on one side and two on the other). Steel pommel. Guard with two straight quillons ending in half-spheres. Guard held to the hilt by a brass wire hoop. The guard has very slight play. Curved single-edged blade, engraved with the blacksmith's signature in a cartouche on one side. Blade forged from beautiful Damascus steel. The grain has faded over time but remains visible in places. Unfortunately, old sharpening of the blade's edge with a grindstone has left ugly marks.
