Blolo Bian Statuette (mystical Spouse) - Ivory Coast, Baoulé, 20th Century
Blolo Bian Statuette (Mystical Husband) - Ivory Coast, Baoulé, 20th Century. This carved wooden male statuette represents a husband from the afterlife, also known as a mystical husband. The Baoulé people have a widespread belief that partners in a couple have a spouse (blolo bian) in a parallel world. This mystical spouse can manifest as jealousy and cause discord, impotence, and infertility within the couple. To appease and please this spouse, statuettes in their likeness, like this one, are carved and placed in the home. This statuette, with its dark patina, reflects a fine mastery of woodworking and embodies the standards of Baoulé sculpture: graceful curves, fine scarification, and a glossy finish. Estimated age: mid-20th century. Weight: 373g. Height: 30.5cm.
