An Arab shamshir saber with calligraphed blade - Levant countries, probably Syria, 19th century Inscription on the blade: الكبر الله اكبر العز بالسيفصاحبها الياس ابن تقوم عاله Translation: "God is great, glory comes from the sword. Property of Elias Ibn Taqoum Ala" On the other side of the blade, near the handle, are engraved stars, an anthropomorphic crescent moon and two anthropomorphic suns. Handle with two horn plates decorated with inlaid nails (tin?) and two white metal splints riveted with tinned brass buttons. Silver-plated metal pommel. Guard with two straight quillons ending in half-spheres. Grade in copper alloy formerly silver-plated. Guard held to the handle by a brass wire hoop. The guard has a slight play. Curved blade with a single edge and a flat back. Two wide fullers on the first quarter then a wide fuller topped with three narrow fullers. Length 91cm Blade length 78cm Weight 880gr
