"Melonière In Gien Earthenware, "otalian Renaissance" Decoration On A Blue Background, 1941–1950."
Charming fine earthenware melonière from the Gien factory, hand-decorated in the style of the Italian Renaissance. The deep blue background hosts a profusion of polychrome grotesques in yellow, green, ochre and white tones, mixing chimeras, putto, foliage, urns, musical instruments and floral garlands. This rich composition is inspired by 16th-century Italian majolica, with this decoration developed in Gien from the second half of the 19th century (from 1871), the model was so successful with collectors that the factory continued production during the 20th century. The scalloped oval shape with a gadrooned edge and highlighted with an elegant yellow chained ribbon is typical of the house's ornamental tableware. The bottom bears the blue stamp with three turns and the hand-painted mention "Gien France", used between 1941 and 1950, attesting to its period of manufacture. A decorative piece, typical of the historicist revival in 20th century earthenware art. Dimensions: Length: 30 cm Width: 23.5 cm Height: 8.5 cm Perfect condition. Provenance: Parisian collection
