Genre painter born in Granville (Manche).
First studied in Le Havre with Jacques-François Ochard with Claude Monet, with whom he became friends, then at the studio of Alexandre Cabanel in Paris.
In Paris, he admired the works of Ingres and met Jongkind. He exhibited at the Salon from 1859.
He taught from 1871 at the École des Beaux-Arts du Havre, where his students included Raoul Dufy, Gaston Prunier and Georges Braque. He headed the commission for purchasing works of art for the city's museums from 1882.
From 1884, he was director of the Musée des Beaux-Arts du Havre. His works are preserved in particular at the Musée du Havre, the Musée de Mulhouse and the Musée de Saint Lô.
