The Artist:
Jean Commère (1920–1986) was a French painter, draftsman, watercolorist, and printmaker. Trained at the École des Beaux-Arts in Angers and later at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, he developed a highly personal figurative style after the war, characterized by a free and energetic brushstroke and a pronounced taste for color. Notably, he won the Othon-Friesz Prize in 1952. His landscapes, genre scenes, seascapes, and figures constitute a significant part of his body of work.
A very lovely small format, but above all a highly decorative work despite its size. The texture, the vibrant color palette, and the almost graphic composition give it far more presence than a simple 14 × 22 cm painting would suggest.
