Description of the work: This striking composition depicts the moment of maximum tension in a bullfight: the bull, charging, confronts the matador's pink muleta. The animal's powerful body, rendered in deep blacks, contrasts with the vibrancy of the cape and the ochre light of the arena sand. The scene is structured by a stylized background evoking the stands, where a crowd suggested by geometric shapes and muted colors establishes a very modern, graphic depth. This treatment gives the scene an almost abstract dimension.
Gilles Coudour (born in 1942) is a French painter based in the Loire department. He was trained at the Beaux-Arts in Lyon. His work develops a synthetic figuration, with an assertive graphic vocabulary, where the construction of space takes precedence: flat areas, colorful rhythms and stylized silhouettes give the scenes a strong visual presence.
