José Vela Zanetti (Milagros, Burgos, 1913 – Burgos, 1999) was a painter best known for his murals. He began his training in León, where he had settled with his family, and held his first exhibition there in 1931. With his father’s support, he spent a few months in Madrid attending exhibitions and visiting the Prado Museum. Shortly thereafter, he received a scholarship from the Provincial Council of León to travel to Italy. Due to the Spanish Civil War, he went into exile in the Dominican Republic, where he remained until 1960. In Santo Domingo, he founded the National School of Fine Arts alongside other exiled artists. During this period, he held exhibitions and carried out projects in Mexico, Colombia, Puerto Rico, and the United States. Throughout his life, he received major public commissions, such as the mural unveiled in 1953 at United Nations Headquarters to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, considered his most important work. Also worth mentioning are the historical murals created for the Provincial Council of Burgos and those at the former Ercilia Theater in Barahona, Dominican Republic. He was a member of the San Fernando Academy and held an honorary doctorate from the University of Burgos. In 2001, the Villa de Madrid Cultural Center organized a retrospective exhibition titled “Antológica,” dedicated to Vela Zanetti’s work—the most significant to date. An exhibition commemorating the tenth anniversary of his death was recently held at the Ángeles Penche Gallery in Madrid. Some of his works are held in the collections of the Caja Rural de Burgos and the Vela Zanetti Foundation in León, as well as murals in various cities in Spain, in Santo Domingo, in the United States, in Colombia, and in Switzerland. In 2013, a major exhibition dedicated to Vela Zanetti’s work was organized at the Forum Evolución in Burgos, marking the centennial of his birth. ·
