Raymond Besse was born in Niort in 1899 and arrived in Paris in 1916 to make a living from his art. He quickly made a name for himself, taking part in the Salon des Indépendants for the first time in 1923. He went on to take part in many other salons, including the Salon d'Automne. His favorite places of inspiration were Montmartre, Paris's northern suburbs "La Zone", Saint-Ouen and Clichy, where he faithfully portrayed life in the so-called working-class districts of the first half of the century.
