A pupil of Regnault, then of Augustin and Aubry, he exhibited at the Salon from 1804 to 1831. He made numerous portraits of the Bonaparte family (Empress Josephine, Napoleon I, Hortense de Beauharnais), the sovereigns of the Restoration (Charles X) and the July monarchy, as well as a large number of miniature portraits, Among them was the one at the foot of Prince Boris Kourakine, exhibited in 1810, of General Compans, of Count Stanislas Rossakouski, in 1812; of Zimmerman, in 1814, of the Duke of Gramont and Guiche, in 1817.
Considered one of the greatest French miniaturists of the 19th century1, he obtained a second-class medal in 1806 and a first-class medal in 1808. He was a painter to the king and a knight of the Legion of Honour.
In 1842 he left Rue Neuve-du-Luxembourg to return to Saint-Lô where he ended his life five years later. The city’s Museum of Fine Arts has some copies of his works.
