Pair Of Miniatures By Thugut Heinrich (austrian, Active From 1830 To 1850)
Artist: Thugut Heinrich
A pair of family miniatures created around 1830/1840 by the Austrian miniaturist Thugut Heinrich. The artist worked in Vienna and Krumau between 1830 and 1850. In 1859, he exhibited his portraits and miniatures at the Vienna Art Union (Kunstverein). His portrait of Duke Tascher de la Pagerie, dated 1832, was shown at the Albertina in Vienna in 1924.
Although little known, this painter is highly regarded by collectors for the extraordinary intelligence of his miniatures. These portraits, imbued with expression and strength, are executed with great care and profound sensitivity.
Regarding the sitters: both came from Austrian and English noble families. The husband, Count Hermann Paumgarten (1806-1846), belonged to the famous Munich noble family of Paumgarten (see online articles on Mozart's life in Munich). The wife, Countess Mary Paumgarten, née Erskine (1806-1874), was the daughter of the 2nd Baron David Montagu-Erskine (1777-1855), Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Austrian court, and Frances (Fanny) Cadvalader.
