Pair Of Small Dishes In Polychrome Glazed Earthenware - School Of Paris, 19th Century
A fine pair of small oval dishes in polychrome glazed earthenware, each featuring a fish in relief, surrounded by frogs, reptiles, insects, shells and foliage, in the tradition of Bernard Palissy’s “rustic ware”.
Both dishes follow the same model, with slight variations in the arrangement of the decorative elements around the border, lending each its individual character.
Lively relief decoration enriches the compositions, highlighted by a rich palette of greens, blues, browns and yellows against a finely textured ground.
The decoration reflects the 19th-century revival of Palissy-inspired ceramics. The composition and treatment of the ornament can be compared with the Parisian productions of Barbizet and Thomas-Victor Sergent.
French work, second half of the 19th century.
